Cashew nuts are an important agricultural export revenue source for Côte d'Ivoire, with annual export production of nearly 140,000 tons — making it the second-largest agricultural export product after cotton. Cashew cultivation employs approximately 200,000 people, making it a cornerstone crop for rural livelihoods.
West Africa's Strategic Position
West Africa accounts for roughly 45% of global cashew production, with Côte d'Ivoire contributing nearly half of that volume — alongside Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, and Ghana. Annual harvest volumes are expected to reach around one million tons, providing a strong foundation for efficient procurement and export execution.
Processing Gap & Export Opportunity
Although Africa is one of the world's largest cashew-producing regions, its processing capacity remains limited. South Asia — particularly India, Vietnam, and Cambodia — accounts for approximately 90% of global cashew processing, while Tanzania, Mozambique, Indonesia, and Brazil produce the remaining 10% of global output. In Côte d'Ivoire, foreign buyers have historically acquired about 80% of raw output. Stabilising prices, upgrading the cashew industry chain, and promoting local processing are key development directions — and a clear opportunity for IPF.
